Tips on setting up a Perfect Bound Book with crossover images and text.

PERFECT BOUND BOOKLET CROSSOVER.jpgHow do I set up an image spread in a Perfect Bound Book?

A Perfect Bound booklet is designed with a binding that prevents it from opening flat. Depending on how many pages you have within your book will determine how thick your spine will be. However, when dealing with images or text spread across facing pages, certain adjustments need to be made to ensure a seamless appearance without affecting the spine's integrity.

Covers

If adjusting the image is not feasible, follow these recommendations:

  • For spreads on the inner front and back covers, move each page's content (on each side of the spread) by 6mm outwards.

  • Please be aware that there is a non-printable margin on the inside cover where the spine is situated. This margin spans 5mm on either side of the spine, and it is essential to consider this when making any adjustments to your image.

Inner Pages

  • Crossovers within the content pages, shift each page's content outwards by 3mm. Even page to the left, odd page to the right.

  • Just remember to allow the image to continue into the spine area and not to leave it while, as this will be seen by the reader and look unsightly.

While this adjustment may appear unusual, it ensures that the printed booklet maintains better alignment.

Option 2 (recommended):

Shift the focus away from the centre of the spread. This can be achieved by moving an image or text off-centre or selecting a different image. By doing so, the tightness of the spine's join becomes less noticeable, resulting in a smoother visual experience when reading across the facing pages.

Please note – Achieving perfect alignment with images crossing over the spine area in perfect bound booklets will never be accurate. However, following these steps can help minimise the impact.
