How to create a custom shape for print?
Set up your file, add a custom contour layer above your artwork layer, set up a spot colour in magenta, create a custom cut line, export your file as PDF/X-4:2010 and upload for print.
When it comes to specific shapes, there are a few things to consider with print. Follow these steps to set it up using design software like Adobe Illustrator.
Step 1: Set Up Your Design File
Before creating your print file, establish your design file. It's best practice to set up two layers in your panel, name the top one 'Cut contour' for your custom shape and the second one 'Artwork' for your design.
Please note: You can supply both your 'Artwork' and 'Cut contour' on the same layer, just ensure that the 'Cut contour' is set above your artwork graphics.
Step 2: Create Your Design
Design your artwork, considering the custom-cut shape you desire. Extend background elements over the cutting line and avoid placing important text or images at the very edge due to a 5mm cutting tolerance.
To ensure your custom shape looks its best, we have provided guidelines to assist you in setting up your design for accurate printing.
Step 3: Set Up a Spot Colour
In the Swatch panel, create a new colour named 'Cut contour' (case sensitive). Change the colour type to 'Spot Colour' and set magenta to 100%. This colour will be used for the custom cut line.
Step 4: Create the Custom Cut Line
Using the new spot colour, create the cutting line as a stroke with a thickness of 0.25pt.
We recommend you avoid sharp corners for the best finish, and ensure the cut line is a single, continuous line with no breaks.
Important Note - Under the Attributes menu, make sure that you tick the 'Overprint Stroke' tab. This will ensure that the magenta line will not be printed on your board.
Step 5: Export Your File
Review your design and export your file as a PDF for printing. We recommend using PDF/X-4:2010 for the best results, as it maintains the spot colour information needed for cutting.
Step 6: Upload Your PDF
Upload the PDF file with your custom design when placing your order. We'll use this file to cut your product into the desired shape.
